Ever heard of Vanilla Stitch?

I hadn’t until recently.  But she’s AWESOME.

There’s a feature on the Instagram app where you can explore pictures based on other people that you follow. Occasionally, there are some amazing illustrations that pop up in mine, and Sally, whose art comprises Vanilla Stitch’s instagram feed, has been one of my favorite random instagram finds.

For the longest time, I’ve wanted to approach her about sprucing up my blog header. I finally got the nerve to spend some $$ on this hobby (that wouldn’t be fabric-related spending), and I was thrilled that instead of letting me hire her, she agreed to a swap. I’d make her a cushion cover, and she’d sketch up a little fun for my header.

Scrappy Patchwork pillow

I plan to make her a little something else to go in her package, but this tiny pillow cushion is my first start. The squares all came from my scrap bin and are cut at 3″. It makes for a tiny pillow, but it’s bright and fun. The quilting is straight-line on either side of the seams with a light blue Aurifil 40wt thread.

Scrappy Patchwork pillow back

I had a bit of an uh-oh moment. I think it’s important to document mistakes, and despite my pinning, my fabrics slipped and my seam allowance didn’t catch one spot of my pillow backing. I resewed the seam and zig-zagged it for good measure.

I’m still pondering what else I might put in her package, but at the moment, I’m so thrilled with my new header that I’ve got to come up with something super fun to go with this little cushion!

Very cute header! I love the idea of a barter for services, makes it so much more personal than just exchanging money.

Love this. I recently made a pillow cover out of 100 HSTs. It received good “reviews” LOL. I am sure the recipient will be thrilled. Great colors. Love the scale and especially the backing. Visiting from Finish it up Friday.
